This attractive slideshow with audio caption explains the different parts of a typical syllabus. The presentation is logical, through, and easy to understand and offers valuable information.
Some students may find it boring because it is just a slideshow. Flip the class by having students watch the slideshow before class and then take a quiz and discuss in class. Since many students are reluctant to devote time to reading the syllabus, this video could help them develop a mental need to know what is on the syllabus.

In this somewhat humorous, short video (1.5 min.) a student blogger plays the role of a student who asks questions that were all already answered on the syllabus.
Use this video to launch a fun class activity and drive the point home. Write questions on slips of paper and put them into a basket. Make sure that at least 70% of the questions are about things in the syllabus. The other questions could be about details of an assignment that are not explained fully in the syllabus. Have each student draw a question from the basket at the beginning of class. Play the video. Then randomly call on students to read their question. If the answer to the question is in the syllabus, have the class retort in unison, "It's in the syllabus!" If the answer is not in the syllabus, then answer the question in a normal fashion.

Most students will find this video humorous. One concern is that the cartoon student is depicted as stupid and the cartoon teacher is depicted as contemptuous. Instructors should preview to take note of this and address it directly in the follow-up discussion if necessary.

Dr. Gilbert sits behind his desk and quickly explains why these ten behaviors will help make students successful in college. He concludes with a brief inspirational story similar to those he offers via recorded phone message every day. I called the college success message line on February 25, 2015, and confirmed that, as of that date, it was still operational.
Gilbert's Tips were:
1. Show up.
2. Pay attention.
3. Ask questions.
4. Ask for help.
5. Help others.
6. Take notes.
7. Do the work.
8. Do not cheat.
9. Do not quit.
10. Call me every day for a college success message 973-743-4690.
Description from the comments section of YouTube: "This is a good motivational video, especially for community college students who are bright however they lack motivation and enthusiasm and expect to pass without attending any classes." I. Y. Hamdi
Play at the beginning of the semester. Then play again close to midterm and ask students if their opinion about these tips has changed now that they have more experience.
Also survey students a couple of weeks after playing the video to see if any of them called the number to hear the college success message. If students do respond positively to Gilbert's messages then the messages could be a psychological support to students and could reinforce "grit."

This is a "Student Story" video from The College Board website. Holly, a college senior, talks about her experience making the transition from high school to college.
Transcript:
"I was a little nervous of going into a college English class where people talk intelligently about literature.I felt a little intimidated.Had I not taken American literature,
I know I wouldn 't be the person I am today, because a lot of those authors and the works I read really did shape a lot of my new views and opinions that came through going to college and through taking my classes. I've changed a lot since high school.
It's not going to be a literature class for everyone. It's about finding your niche and how you relate to the world, and that's going to be through different means for each person."
Instructors could take a few of these student story videos and incorporate them into a slideshow that augments a lecture/discussion lesson. Or they could play it on a loop in a public place on campus, such as the student center. Luis Martinez-Fernandez, professor of history at the University of Central Florida, talks about why college is a chance to take charge of your education.
Transcript: "
I think students should know,
high school students should be aware of the fact that there are some profound differences between the world of high school and the world of college. They 're both educational institutions, of course, but the way in which you learn is quite different. Whereas students at the high school level are sort of guided through the learning process, in college you have to do a lot of the learning yourself. And professors are there to guide you, of course, but a lot of the learning happens outside of the classroom.
"The other thing I'd like students to learn and know about college, which is quite different from the high school experience, is that college is a larger institution with many resources. There are guest speakers coming to campus on a weekly basis, speaking from all sorts of disciplines and experiences from different countries around the world. And what I tell students at the university where I teach is that it 's your responsibility to get the most out of this university. You can do the minimum-that is, show up for class, do your homework, get a grade at the end of the term, and then graduate. But that's a very small part of the college experience."
You could include this video with a few other of the student story videos and incorporate them into a slideshow that augments a lecture/discussion lesson. Or it could be set up to play on a loop in a public place on campus, such as the student center.

This video is a bit longer than many (16 minutes), but it does cover many topics under the umbrella of planning. One way to deal with the length would be to show it in sections, pausing for discussion between. Discussion questions could include the following: (1) Make a list of the planning and organization recommendations presented in the video. (2) Which recommendations presented in the video do you think would work for you? (3) Which recommendations do you think would not help you? Why not? The student in the video used a rather feminine style and colors to adorn her planner. It includes discussion of the read, recite, and review steps and a demonstration of how to do them to improve both understanding and recall. Finally the video suggests covering the right column and then using the questions in the cue column for regulation (self-testing).

Tony Buzan, inventor of the mind map, explains the idea behind mind maps and how they help you better think and remember. He emphasizes the use of drawings and color rather than just words. His outline: (1) examine your current notes, (2) develop mind maps, and (3) use mind maps.
Instructors who teach mind mapping to their students may wish to show this video; in it, Buzan explains the use of drawings and color (a detail omitted by other videos on the subject). The examples in the video look nice but are caught on camera only briefly. Therefore, instructors may wish to be prepared to pause the video so that the class can examine the examples. Or the instructor may wish to have additional examples on hand to share with students during the postvideo discussion.

In this talking head video with white board and note pages as visual aids from College-Student-Answers.com the speaker describes how to make a mind map and presents several examples.
Using the mind map as a note-taking tool may resonate more with some students than others. It is good to offer students several alternative methods of taking notes and of thinking about the information they learn in college. The mind map method is an alternative to the traditional popular Cornell method, the latter of which is explained in detail in the textbook. Students should be encouraged to try the different methods and evaluate which method will serve them best for specific classes. Instructors using the College Success textbook should note that mapping as a strategy for understanding the relationships between different vocabulary is also covered in Chapter 4: Reading.

In this talking head video, Thomas Frank discusses tips for active reading. He does not use SQR3 or SOAR but instead offers tips as an alternative approach. Techniques include pseudo-skimming, read backward, come up with questions after you read, pay attention to the formatting of the text, and mark in the book (take notes in the margins) as you read. He also recommends some books for students to read.
This video may be helpful to some students, but I would caution your class that the SOAR method described in Chapter 4 of the textbook has been proven by research to work. Ask students to compare the tips Frank offered to the SOAR method (for example, one could argue that Frank's idea of "pseudo - skimming" is really similar to the "S - select what is important" step of SOAR.) Comparing the two will help students retain the best of both.

This video offers eight steps to help students remember what they read. Prior to applying these steps, students must find the motivation to absorb information and improve retention.
Step 1: Skim information, not as a primary means of absorbing information but always as a preparation for gathering key points.
Step 2: Read word groups rather than single words.
Step 3: Categorize and associate information you read with other knowledge in your life.
Step 4: Take notes and say the words aloud to hear yourself and help commit it to memory.
Step 5: Study with purpose and grill yourself with questions to reinforce the lesson.
Step 6: Visualize to recall.
Step 7: Keep a single focus by concentrating with purpose on one thing at a time.
Step 8: Pick the time of day when you're most alert and schedule your study time accordingly.
This video supports the recommendations for reading that were offered in Chapter 4 of College Success. It would be a good online supplement video for the lesson on reading.

This video, produced by Irvine Valley College, includes narration, live action, and a learning styles inventory that the viewer takes while watching. The learning styles that the video focuses on are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.
Students may enjoy this video because they are likely to enjoy taking the inventory. Recent research does not support the idea that each student has one particular learning style. Instead, while a student may enjoy one learning mode more than others, it is best for students to employ all the different styles from time to time as is appropriate to the context in which they are learning. Make sure that students understand this. They should take advantage of all the tips they learn from this video, but they should not limit themselves in terms of learning style or study techniques. As is explained in Chapter 6 of College Success, "Your learning style preferences are dependent on the situation, and you can switch from one to the other depending on what your learning environment is like....[Also] remember that learning style preferences are not written in stone - and should never be used to determine whether or not you can accomplish something."

In this "Student Story" video from The College Board, Gabriela, a college junior shares how her professor helped her during office hours.
Transcript: "I had a favorite professor. My major is chemistry but he was an English professor, and even though I love reading, I 'm horrible at writing. And he was very patient. He's a hilarious professor, and every time we would get out of a test or an essay writing that we had to do inclass, I would get one of the lowest grades. And I 'm the type of person where you get a B, it's an F.So I would get the lowest grades and I wouldn 't understand, you know, I had never done that bad. So I would always go to the professor about what's wrong. 'What's wrong with me ? I don 't know how to write.' He was very patient. You know, I would visit his classroom, I would say like once, at least once, every day, just to keep asking him about the same assignment over and over again.I would bring him an example of the essay. 'Do you think this is right?' And he would just start writing all over it with a red pen. 'Over here this is wrong, over here you have to talk more about this,' but it was extremely challenging.I ended up with a B in the class, but I learned so much.I came out of the class knowing so much more about essay writing, about everything, everything."
This video is associated with connecting to resources (Chapter 8) because it is an example of what we want students to do regarding getting help when they need it. Use it to start a discussion about the purpose of professor office hours and about other helpers on campus.

Length: 4:44 min College Success 6th Edition Coordination: Chapter 9
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
This video gives a quick overview of how the brain responds to stress resulting in anxiety. Anxiety, stress, and fear are triggered primarily through your senses. Anxiety is a fear of something that cannot be located in space and time. Knowing how the brain responds to the stimuli that trigger an anxiety response may help equip students to deal appropriately with anxiety.
Have students watch the video and then respond to these questions.
1. How do you define anxiety?
2. What causes anxiety? (Answer: "Anxiety is a fear of something that cannot be located in space and time. Most often it is that indefinable something triggered initially by something real that you sense, that in itself is not threatening, but it is associated with a fearful memory.")
3. Try to think of a time recently when you experienced anxiety. Can you speculate what fearful memory may have triggered it? After the students have answered the questions individually, moderate a group discussion to promote more in-depth understanding. Ask students to brainstorm how they could react to anxiety to reduce it.

In this talking head video from College-Student-Answers.com, the speaker presents four steps to reduce test anxiety: (1) good preparation, (2) positive visualization about the test, (3) practice good testing skills, and (4) control your breathing to relax yourself during the test. Strengths: Some students may resonate with the common sense solution provided. It may offer hope or inspiration for them. Weaknesses: It is unclear whether this advice is simply opinion or is based on evidence-based research; the speaker does not explain or give any examples of "good testing skills."
To use this video effectively, instructors should collect information on good testing skills and be prepared to include that information in postvideo discussion. The video "Exam Strategies" by Kevin Patton (http://youtu.be/yrgNyDH3HrQ) includes good testing skills and could be used in concert with this video.

In this video, Dr. Ben Locke, associate director of clinical services, discusses test anxiety and factors involved with the condition. However, this is not simply a talking head video. In this higher-quality moving picture production, Dr. Locke's counsel is punctuated by two students who share their personal story and by a video of the students actually practicing Dr. Locke's recommendations (such as exercise before an exam). The video was published by Pennsylvania State University (Penn State World Campus) in 2013. Although it is only about 5 minutes long, it conveys a lot of useful instruction and practical information.
While this video would be especially beneficial for students who suffer from test anxiety, much of the practical advice given in the video would benefit any student. Encourage students to enjoy the video as presented but to also take notes for their personal application. Title: Credit Card Debt Explained with a Glass of Water Video Number: 86
URL: http://youtu.be/Vz05A6cP6Iw Play ▸ (⧉ new window)
Length: 3:24 min College Success 6th Edition Coordination: Chapter 9
License: Standard YouTube License
This video uses a pitcher and a glass of water to demonstrate the effects of minimum credit card payments. If a glass of water represents your credit card debt, then making a minimum payment would be like pouring a little of the water out of the glass. Then when a credit card company adds the interest to the amount that you owe, that is like pouring most (almost all) of the water back into the glass so that you still owe almost the total amount that you originally did. The numeric example used in the video includes an initial loan of $10,000 at 17% interest with a minimum payment of $142. After one payment of $142, when the interest was added to the account, the borrower stilled owed $9,999 (only one dollar less). After the borrower makes a second minimum payment and the interest is added back, the borrower will have paid $284 but will have only reduced his/her debt by $2. After a year of only minimum payments, the borrower will have paid $1,846 but will have only reduced his/her debt by $5 (still owing $9,995). Because the borrower paid only minimum payments, he/she was basically only paying the interest. The borrower must pay more than the minimum in order to pay off part of the principle (the original amount borrowed).
This simple short video using the glass of water as an illustration is very powerful. It is easy to understand, and it will be helpful to students with any math phobia. It would be a great supplement to include as part of a lecture or to include as part of a lesson in an online class. Use this video to augment the section on financial balance in Chapter 9 of College Success.

As a handout sheet; give the students a partly completed note page containing a two-column table. Column 1 is labeled "Fees" and has the six fees discussed in the video (annual fee, application and set-up fee, cash advance fee, over-the-limit fee, late fee, and returned check fee) already listed on six rows beneath the column. Column 2 is labeled "Strategy" and has blank rows beneath it. Ask students to fill in the strategy column by writing what they need to do to avoid each fee. This can be done as they watch the video (note taking) or as a follow-up after they have watched. Title: This Could Change Your Mind about Your College Major Video Number: 97
URL: http://youtu.be/aGA3nTyS6PQ Play ▸ (⧉ new window)
Length: 2:55 min College Success 6th Edition Coordination: Chapter 10

Lisa Ferguson discusses two schools of thought about choosing a college major: (1) College is about self-development and general preparation, because many people work in fields not directly related to their major; and (2) students should consider the impact that changes in the economic climate and increasing numbers of graduates may have on their choice of major. Some careers require a graduate-level degree.
This video could also be used as a discussion starter for students who are trying to decide on a major. Students should be warned that the statistics presented in the video are 2013 numbers and that the data may have changed. Students should also consider that there are a range of salaries for any of the careers described. Salaries may also vary greatly by geographic region. Therefore students should discover and consider the range rather than a single numeric descriptor.

This is a Kahn Academy video. Many credit cards advertise an annual APR that is actually less than what the customer is charged in a year. In these cases, the actual method for calculating the interest is to compound a daily interest rate 365 times. This video also explains compounding.
Chapter 11 of College Success has a brief treatment of financial balance. Since effective money management is an important factor that affects academic success, instructors may wish to use this video and others to augment the section on financial balance. This video is good to help students understand different interest rates and how they are charged.

Title: Credit Card Debt Explained With a Glass of Water Video Number: 99
URL: http://youtu.be/Vz05A6cP6Iw Play ▸ (⧉ new window)
Length: 3:24 min College Success 6th Edition Coordination: Chapter 11

Use this video to augment the section on financial balance in Chapter 11 of College Success.

This video explains how a student (or anyone) could experience enormous savings by choosing a good used car instead of a new car (loan).
This video would make a very good discussion starter. It could lead to discussion of making wise purchase decisions, doing the math ahead of a purchase, considering the needs vs. wants question when deciding on a purchase, counting the cost of purchasing things by loan, and the power of even a small investment toward a mutual fund as savings if you start early and give the money time to grow.

This video describes some of the most common fees that borrowers are assessed by credit cards, such as the annual fee, application and set-up fee, cash advance fee, over-the-limit fee, late fee, and returned check fee.
You could provide this simple information in a lecture; however, sometimes it breaks up the monotony to let the video do it for you. The video could also fit nicely into an online lesson or module.

This cartoon video from Wellcast offers five strategies for getting enough sleep: (1) develop a relaxing bedtime ritual, (2) maintain a regular sleep schedule, (3) don't watch your clock, (4) create an optimal sleep environment, and (5) unplug (avoid using electronics just before going to sleep).
Since getting good sleep is part of what college students need to maintain balance, this video would be useful to augment the content of Chapter 12 in College Success. In an online course you could use it as supplemental viewing for your module or lesson about balance.
